Born in Argentina, living in London since 1967, quilting is a very European art form for me. My inspiration comes from many different sources: natural life and forms, the urban landscape, events, objects, the environment, magic and the cosmos, experiences, ideas. The resulting work is clearly characterized by my love of colour. I use deep, bright colours, and I put them together in my own unique way. My favourite techniques are freehand cutting and curved machine piecing, fused appliqué and collage, and no-marking machine quilting. Recently I have been experimenting with printing my own digital output on fabric and other materials. I take photographs rather than draw. To achieve a good photograph one needs to succesfully arrange the shapes and areas, colours and values, seen through the lens, into a frame, and that is echoed in the way I construct my hangings, using line, shape, texture, colour, value. I work mostly in an intuitive way, directly on the design wall, with reference photographs at hand, sometimes with a very simple sketch, other times with just an idea whirling around in my head. I am influenced and inspired by a number of early 20th century painters, such as Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Robert and Sonia Delaunay, and also by more contemporary artists, among them Hundertwasser, Howard Hodgkin and Ton Schulten. | |||||||||||
